A roof valley may be only a narrow line where two roof slopes meet, but it handles an outsized amount of water. During a hard Alabama downpour, runoff from both slopes is directed into that channel. That is why roof valleys leak more often than many other areas of a shingle roof: small installation mistakes, aging materials, or storm damage are put under constant pressure every time it rains.

A ceiling stain near the center of your home, a drip after a wind-driven storm, or shingle damage along an inside roof corner should not be ignored. Valley leaks can travel before becoming visible indoors, allowing water to affect decking, insulation, and framing. The good news is that finding the actual cause early can often limit the scope and cost of the repair.

What Makes a Roof Valley Different?

Most parts of a roof shed water in a broad, simple path. A valley concentrates that water flow into one area. The steeper the roof, the larger the roof sections feeding the valley, and the heavier the rain, the more water the valley must carry.

Valleys are typically built as either open valleys, where metal flashing remains visible, or closed valleys, where shingles cover the valley area. Both methods can perform well when properly installed with the correct underlayment, flashing details, fasteners, and shingle placement. The problem is not that one valley style is automatically bad. The problem is that valleys leave little room for error.

A leak does not always show up directly below the valley. Water can follow roof decking, rafters, wiring, or insulation before it reaches the ceiling. Look for fresh water spots, peeling paint, bubbling drywall, damp insulation in the attic, or a musty odor after rainfall.

Outside, warning signs include dark streaks in the valley, shingles that are curled or missing, exposed nail heads, rusted valley metal, accumulated debris, and uneven roof surfaces. If you can see daylight in the attic or notice wet wood near an inside roof corner, arrange an inspection promptly.

Avoid climbing onto the roof to investigate, particularly after rain or storm damage. Roof valleys can be slick, and walking in the area can damage brittle shingles or worsen loose flashing. A safe exterior and attic evaluation is the better approach.

A dependable valley repair starts with identifying where water is entering, not simply where it appears indoors. The contractor should inspect the shingles, flashing, underlayment, decking, nearby penetrations, and attic conditions. The surrounding shingles must be integrated carefully so water sheds correctly.

When the damage is widespread or the roof has aging materials across multiple slopes, a patch may not be the best investment. Storm Damage and Insurance Considerations
